Project Information

I went down to our local fly shop to pick up some leaders and flies for my first fly fishing trip of the year this coming Wednesday. The owner of this particular Orvis shop is kind enough to carrying one of my fly fishing clocks and a couple bowls.

As I walked around the store, I couldn't find one of the bigger bowls I had there:

As it turns out, it had sold! After taking his cut, he cut me a check for $55.

It inspired me to go through my burls and do another bowl. The piece above had been used to make two clocks, but there was still enough there to work with. I'm not sure the kind of wood, but I knew it gets really dark when the poly is added. I used the Dead Flat Varnish to keep that from happening too much, but you can see that it got pretty dark.

It was also very dried out and took nearly 10 coats of wipe-on poly to get a bit of a shine on it.

I went shallow with the bowl portion itself because I noticed as I ground more toward the center, I was starting to lose some of the grain details.

Thanks for taking a look!
