I saw this slab of persimmon right before Easter. The bark and cathedral pattern combination reminded me of the empty tomb, so this project was born. It took a lot of flattening as the wood was really cupped. Laser engraved message. The bark still had some moss which made a really cool effect, so I sprayed poly over everything to seal it in.
The plaque will stand on its own, so the base was an afterthought for more stability. Made from bark-on walnut to continue the theme. It has three dowels so the plaque can be removed for storage, but my wife claimed it and now it is a permanent fixture on our mantle, along with her little angel statue which complements nicely.

Great project. I agree that the cathedral grain provides a nice visual to match the message.
