Ice Cream Sandwich
- 8×5 x 6 inches
- Indiana walnut and Tennessee maple
- Wood hinges with integrated stop at 95 degrees
- Automatic latch
- Box joint pattern
- Book matched inside and outside
I designed the automatic latch because I was dissatisfied with my prior projects which required you to hold the latch(es) open during closure. Otherwise, the latch would fold into the box by gravity as I closed the lid.
My new design will close and latch automatically; slam the box shut if you like (or by accident)!Details:
- The barrel of the latch (small hinge) is installed into a mortise on the front of the lid to prevent the leaf from folding into the box and interfering with closure.
- A brass pin is installed in the leaf at seven degrees and fits in a matching hole in the base.
- A small guiding divot and the sloped lip on the base provide a ramp to push open the latch while closing the box lid.
- Magnets in the latch and box body cause it to snap shut and seat the pin when fully closed.
All comments welcome. Enjoy!

Very well done, great craftsmanship in the build, from the finger joints to the hinges. The latch system sounds very interesting and it looks much better than a hobby store item.

so very nice – I like the laminate reveal in the box joints, breaks the color and gives it character not that it needs any help with your great hinges and latch

So many cool details. The lamination is cool and the hinges and latch are sharp.
Great build!

Very cool. We did the same thing on a much smaller scale with smoking pipes. PurpleHeart, Maple, and Jatoba make beautiful pipes.
Your stuff is excellent!
At first glance I thought it was Incra “double-double” dovetails. Then I looked closer and thought it was filled. Finally I figured out what I was looking at and it’s very well done. Hard to do since there is little room for error.
How did you cut the top? The angle on the sides looks like it makes it a not-simple rip.
The hinges are a cool touch. The grain looks like is should hold.
Well done.

Nice job, great execution and attention to details. The maple accents the walnut just right.
