Good-bye Little Bird

Back in December my English budgie, Louie passed away. It was too short a life, even for a bird. As is the case when the ground is frozen, we are keeping her in the deep freeze until Spring comes.

I made this box from some oak in my workshop. It looks big for a parakeet, but I had to figure in her length and room for a few of her favorite toys. The box measures about 10 by 5 by 4 inches. I finished it simply with boiled linseed oil.

Unlike an ash box, for which the bottom goes on last, I made this ‘coffin’ so that the top goes on last and is held on by two screws going into cleats on the lid.

Sorry to hear about your budgie Dave! We’ve had several when we were kids! They certainly are a joy to have! You have made your little birdie a wonderful place to rest!

Sorry about your buddy Dave, pets can become a member of the family & their loss is a sorrowful event. Nice details on the box, very attractive.

I seem to have established a ‘style’ to these boxes. This is the 5th I’ve made in my career.

A pet is a pet and that means a member of the family. So sorry for your loss.
Nice enclosure for your pet

Sorry that you’ve had so many opportunities to get good at these boxes, Dave. Nicely done, though.

This will be the third one we bury in our flower bed. I’d love to see the reaction of whoever finds them after we’re gone.

I’m beginning that making these is part of my own grieving process. I know that I couldn’t bear to just dispose of a pet or just simply bury one.

Well stated!

Sorry for the loss, we all do what we feel is proper. Some may question the effort, but they probably never had a pet they really cared for.

Thanks. And non-bird people sometimes don’t understand that pet birds don’t want to sit in a cage. They want to spend time with their flock. Louie was hand raised and you could tell. She craved being with any of the three of us in the house.
