Stubby Awl Challenge

I’m hosting a challenge where I’ve asked people to make their own awls, send me a picture and I’ll send then an awl that I made (I’m giving away about 100 of them). To make it easier, I showed a couple ways to make an awl using a 6D nail. I made the promise that if you use exotic woods and create a beautiful awl, that not only will you enjoy woodworking more when you use it, but that it will actually make you a better woodworker, which I strongly believe as you’ll gain confidence in what you do.

This has been such a rewarding experience for me (so far) as I’ve received pictures from people and heart warming stories where they hadn’t done much of anything in a long time, and this challenge has gotten them back in the shop.

As woodworkers, we have the opportunity to help lift those around us up through this craft. I constantly remind people that they’re not competing against anyone but themselves and that their growth and experience isn’t dependent on anyone else. Nothing has brought me more happiness than seeing someone say, “I can do that!” and then seeing them do it. I’m so inspired by this community that helps us in these times that we struggle.

If you’re interested in the contest, I’ve created a link for it. Absolutely no monetary profit for me to gain from this (I actually lose material cost in this), but the joy that I get from seeing others create their own…I feel like I could pretty much fly right now.

Excellent! Be sure to send me a pic…I think I’ll add them to the end of each of the awl build videos. This is a simple build that I think will do a lot to help build confidence. So far the feedback has been inspiring…but I’d love to see more!

Thanks Mike
