Gall Wall Clock Take 2

This design proved pretty popular here and among friends, so I wanted to see if I could create it again. Other than playing with some stains and changing the wall hanger, I followed the original design pretty closely. The “speckled trout” pattern of the clock face is something I’m able to get out of a wild cherry gall if I cut into it correctly. The outside frame is from a board of ambrosia maple I got from Lowes. I went back to Lowes and snagged 8 more 8 foot pieces of the maple, so more of these clocks to come. I got the ambrosia maple at $10 a board, so a decent deal I think. I finished my first clock on November 2nd, so it feels fitting to finish this, my 20th clock, on January 2nd.

Another nice clock Van – I’m obviously shopping the wrong Lowes because the local store never seems to have nice lumber

That is a beautiful clock Van, the burl looks great. And you are improving on the miters. Great job.

I really like these designs.

Thanks, Dick… and, yeah, I feel I got pretty lucky with that Lowe’s wood!

Thanks, Eric… I hope my miters get even better in a few weeks. I ordered an older Stanley miter box and saw off of eBay.

Love it I like the way you wrapped the pattern in the miters.

Thanks, Swirt! Getting those patterns to look like they flow into each other from board to board was a bit of work.

Well, Pottz, the fact that my designs might be worthy of stealing is all the compliment I need. Got a better miter box arriving soon… gonna keep trying to perfect these clocks. If there are imperfections, I’m trying to put them at least at the back of the clock, but I know that’s half assing.

Thanks, as always, Jack. I’m still working on my miters, but I don’t think they’ll get much better until I get a better box.

That Lowes would… it’s really beautiful. Not all of it runs from end to end with patterns. Some of the pieces that I didn’t purchase had like a foot of patterned wood, and then the rest was plain.

I think by the time I work through this wood I have, I’ll be tired of making this particular clock.
