First attempt at inlay on a box

Earlier this year, my son-in-law gave me a piece of ebony – barely a small stick – which he grabbed from his grandfather’s shop some 40+ years ago. He asked if I might be able to create something. Once I finished milling the “stick” I had only a small piece about 1/8” thick. So, I built this watch box around it making my first attempt to inlay an initial in a box top. Twas a real challenge. Circles are easy; the letter H is not.

The top also includes a sandwich of maple and cherry strings to accent the inlayed walnut center. Box is walnut; waffle dividers are cherry. Finished with 7-8 padded coats of shellac.

Very nice looking box, good proportions and a nice inlay.

The box looks great. I enjoy doing in lays, they are challenging at times.

I too do inlays and I’d like to be the one to tell you that they get easier as time goes by but it’s not true.

Each and every one is a custom job. Even doing the same inlay side by side will have their own idiosyncrasies. Your craftsmanship is evedent by the use of limited material. If a mistake had been made, would there have been enopugh for a redo?

Well made and well displayed.

Beautiful box. At least you were able to post your first. My first is sitting on a shelf. Messed it up.
