Project Information

Kerfed lining provides a glueing surface on the inside of a guitar - or similar acoustic instrument - to mount the back or top of the instrument to the sides. It is slotted for flexibility and to conform to the curves of the instrument.

1. The first picture shows the toggle clamp which fixes the pivot bar in place. This adjustment sets the depth of the cut.

2. The second picture shows the stop bar on the back of the sled which limits the forward travel of the sled.

3. The closeup on the third picture shows the cut line on the pivot bar, and a second line to the left which is the reference line to advance for the next cut. Cut once, shift left to advance (~3/16"), repeat.

Nicely done. Very similar to my setup but I usually do reverse kerfed lining. Usually Spanish cedar or mahogany.

That's a great jig. I see the stop one the end of the jig. Is it adjustable?

The photos are very well done. I can see every detail.

Keifer often employed timing belts for his jigs. This reminded me of that.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Enjoyed checking out your projects. Really love those guitars FOGHORN.

JIM M: The jig is adjustable, but not from the end stop which only prevents the sled from moving forward in the miter slot. The wood block on the top of the sled has a pivot screw on the right end which allows the block to move the kerf material into or away from the cutting blade. The toggle clamp holds the block in place once the desired depth of the cut is determined.

The cutting sequence is:
1. Push the kerf material into the blade
2. Pull the sled back free of the blade
3. Move the kerf material to the left
4. REPEAT steps 1 to 4

OCELOT:
I took a look at Keifer's timing belt. Definitely an ingenious indexing method.
