Burl/Gall Clock #7

The idea of working on table or mantel clocks has really taken over for me, and design ideas are crowding into my head… to the point that I’m starting to sketch pictures so I don’t forget the ideas.

This one came to me after I discovered that I could cut burl/gall into little rectangular boards using my pruning saw and then my skill saw. Here’s the center piece during the “discovery” cut:

I had a good time making the frame for this (though I might need to ask for an electric miter saw for Christmas!)

The main part of the frame is a piece of clear pine I picked up at Ace and then cut in half to get the width I was looking for. I originally was going to try to anchor the burl/gall pieces with framing nails through the frame, but then the idea came to me that I could get L shaped trim and have a frame in a frame. I really like how that turned out.

I was playing a lot with stains with this one. I wanted the effect of dark interior, light frame, and then some kind of dark, thin outer frame. I found these 3 1/2 by 12 inch packaged planks at Home Depot that I think were called “hobby planks.” My intent was to stain the planks dark, but when I opened the package, I saw that a few of the planks had dark and light “marbling” which you can see in the shots from above and the side. It was a serendipitous discovery.

On the front-facing outer frame, I wanted to put some “bling” for lack of a better term, and the corner tear drop pieces gave me a chance to try my new coping saw, which I really enjoy using:

The center piece or face of the clock is a piece of wild cherry gall. The outer pieces are each pieces of the maple burl from my sister’s yard. The gall/burl pieces are finished in four coats of gloss wipe-on poly while the rest has four coats of satin wipe-on poly.

I may have found my niche with these clocks. I sure enjoy making them.

You sure are developing a very ‘creative’ style all your own as you go. To me, that’s what woodworking is all about.

Very nice project. Very nice result!

Thank you! This is the kind of clock I might replicate because it could have a more universal appeal… and each one would still be different because of different gall/burl.

Well, you can’t get a more ringing endorsement of a burl clock than an endorsement from Burly Bob!

Thank you!

But am I ready to leave the temple… or do I gotta do that thing where I pick up a burning piece of metal with my forearms and brand myself with the markings of burl?

Ok, I watched Kung Fu too much as a kid…

Nicely done Van, your clocks are coming along wonderfully. Always look for more of your designs, to see what you will do next. Great Job.

Thanks, Eric… that means a lot. For my next project, I’m going to try to replicate this clock, partly because I have the materials to do so. I’ll tinker with stain sequencing, but overall I want to see if I can reproduce this clock again.

But thanks for the good words!

I really like this design Jeff, did you do anything to cover the workings in the back?
