Project Information

This is an office cabinet that sits on the floor. I made it with oak boards from the home center. It is a sort of mission style. It would also make a nice sturdy tool cabinet that could be hung on the wall.

I made it with hand tools and traditional joinery. I have a need for the cabinet in my home, but I also wanted to become more proficient at the joinery. I used standard dovetails on the main case, tapered sliding dovetails on the fixed shelf, full blind and mitered dovetails on the base and lap dovetails on the back of the base. I used mortise and tenons on the back and front frames. The back panel is made with tongue and groove pine boards as secondary wood. The top has mortise and tenon clamp joints with a mitered end on the front.

I am particularly proud of the door construction with traditional mortise and tenons and raised panels. The raised panels were interesting to make with the Stanley 45 and bench planes.

You can read about it and see the pictures of the process here.

Thanks for looking. :)

I don't make many straight line projects, however I sure do appreciate them…

That's a beautiful piece of furniture…Super wood…Some real time and patience and skill went into that…Awesome…

That is very nice. I'm assuming some kind of walnut stain?

I used Minwax Early American stain. A classic on oak. I fiddled with some water based stain on the shelves, but it was a bit too assertive. I'm happy with the early American. A bit old fashioned, but a good look if you like mission style, I think…. :)

Thanks Dick. Yeah, I think the top came out nice. Mitered corners with hand tools can try your patience. Don't know if I was lucky or good, but it worked out in the end with tight joints. :)
