Star Wars Nativity

First my wife pulled me away from projects to renovate our back room before Thanksgiving (which we celebrated on Wednesday so our oldest kids wouldn’t have to shuffle between parents’ houses/meals on Thursday). Our Thanksgiving is pretty non-traditional. We have scallops, shrimp and, as a main course of sorts, snow and king crab legs. The meal is always a hit and a tradition I started about 6 years ago when I announced, “You know, I don’t find traditional Thanksgiving food very tasty. Let’s try something else.”

So, non-traditional Thanksgiving, and I suppose a pretty non-traditional nativity. More on that in a second.

Here’s a couple pics of the completed backroom. I put up the shiplap, the crown molding, and some decorative trim around the door frames. Some years ago, I built that wooden table. But, the beauty of the room comes from my wife’s decorative eye. When it comes to our projects, I tend to be the labor and she the designer (though in fairness, short of me painting the ceiling, she did most of the painting… we both put equal hours into the room all told):

With the back room done, I thought I could get back to some more creative woodworking, but then my wife made another request… would I build a lean-to and a manger for an idea she had for a Star Wars nativity scene.

So, that’s my handiwork you see above. The lean-to and manger are largely made from scrap wood I found around our garage. I angled the bottom of the lean-to’s four posts so I could use a rubber mallet to knock the thing into the ground. The rest of the time and creativity are all my wife.

But, I’m finding that because of my recent woodworking, I’m much faster on these projects, especially when it comes to planning, execution, and problem-solving.

So, anyway, I know this isn’t a very involved, creative, or expert project but, with Christmas approaching, I thought some might enjoy seeing it (and the results of the back room).
