Built this small box simply to prove out a miter sled I built in prep of some Christmas builds.

Spalted maple, Purpleheart splines, oak insert and floating bottom. Spray can lacquer exterior, buffed out with steel wool to reduce the shine

That is a Beautiful box you did a great job. If you don’t mind would PM me on where it would be the best place to buy a little Purple Heart wood.

Great use of spalt, and especially your chosen pieces, and their orientation. I didn’t read before looking at pics, and just saw dark keys, looked black. I wondered about Ebony,, PH never looked better.

Nice work.

Nicely done, and the grain looks great with the splines.

Very nice. I like the way you featured the “hurricane” on the top. Well done.

Thanks everyone for your comments.
So many unique grain patterns in the spalted maple makes working with it a joy.

I appreciate y’all taking the time to comment.

Just curious, but do you ever get “It’s dangerous working with spalted maple, because it is full of dangerous spores”? I’ve had people tell me that before. Not sure if there’s any truth to that…but it seems there are people that are hugely against spalted woods.

Which…is okay with me, I’ll take all of it I can get.

I’ve seen some comments on this site but nothing directed at me.

I suppose like everything there are extremes and to that end I guess there are those that are concerned about the spores from decaying leaves.

I appreciate the question
