Project Information

My 7 year old twin grandsons have learned to play chess. They have been playing on a chess board that I made for their dad around 30 years ago. They asked me if I would make them their own chessboards so of course I jumped at the chance.
The playing surface squares are made from walnut and poplar.
The rest of the box and drawers are made from walnut. The top and the raised areas of the sides and drawer fronts are veneered with Karelian Birch. I also added an inlay strip for accent
I finished the playing surface squares with spray on polycrylic. I wanted to use a finish that would keep the light squares as light as possible without yellowing.
The rest of the chessboard is finished using Sam Malloof poly/oil and poly/wax finishes.
Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the comment. Actually, they do each get their own. I made two of these

Very nice! My 7-year-old twins lose things all the time. I would have to have spare chess pieces. But the drawers with dividers have got to help a lot.

Great job, looks amazing. I second the chamfers on the squares being unique one of the first things that caught my eye.

Might buy a second set of playing pieces, my 10 to 14 yo g kids loose stuff all the time.

Beautiful. The black queen is misplaced.

Thanks. Good catch on the black queen. Guess it shows I haven't played chess myself for a while.

Just because I don't pay close attention to detail, I wouldn't have "recognized" the inlay unless you said something. But what an incredible detail that is.
Outstanding project…......incredibly well done.
