Burl Music Box

I’ve been looking forward to sharing the outcome of this project. I decided to take my box making a step further and see if I couldn’t make a music box. I’m pretty pleased with the results!

This project took longer than most… partly because I was waiting on hardware to arrive. I’ve tried and failed a few times to mortise hinges. Since I need more practice, I’ve decided in the meantime to purchase fancier hinges. I also love the front clasp that accompanied the hinges.

I had some scrap from previous projects, so I built the little walls on either side of the musical device. Then, wanting to protect it, I went to Ace Hardware for plexiglass. Even though Ace tends to be a little more expensive, I use them often. I get such personal care. The guy working the cutting room cut me two pieces of plexiglass to size. When I asked how much, he more or less said, “On the house.” Very cool guy, and it’s service like that which will keep me coming back.

I also got to use four more of the feet that I ordered for a different project. That’s my first box fully up on feet.

The musical device itself plays “Moon River,” so I decided to give my painting skills a shot on both sides. I was encouraged by several members of the Lumber Jocks to keep the paintings, so there they are (well, one of them, but the other side is pretty similar).

The finial on top serves two purposes. One, I think it adds some more whimsy and looks a little like a full moon, so fits thematically. But, also, because the box ended up being top heavy, the finial serves the purpose of keeping the box from tipping back when open (see pic!)

Finally, the last picture is of my clamp setup that I’ve mentioned a few times. The piece of burl wood loaded into the clamp is the wood that eventually became this music box. This pic shows the wood just before I started cutting it into a rectangular shape with my Sawzall.

I enjoyed this so much that I’m working on a second music box from a piece of wild cherry gall.

Excellent!

The choice for hardware is a great choice, if you cant hide it, make it look good 8^)

I can see why you want to make more, very organic and classy Van.

Thank you as always, Splint!

I do have one other finial. This has a little darker brass, and it isn’t quite as big as the first. What one would you go with? Both serve the purpose of keeping the box from tipping.

Thanks for always being encouraging, Jack! I think I will end up going with the clear, slightly smaller finial for the top. It calls a little less attention to itself while still carrying out its utilitarian function.

I was pretty happy with how the little paintings turned out too. And, obviously, you can’t hear it from the pics, but the box plays really beautifully.

Very interesting and great looking box, not sure which is the better the hardware or the box. Compliment each other nicely.

Thanks, Ron! I’m going to go with the hardware first and then the box!

Likely one other finial I’m going to buy and try… which will be just a straight, bronze spire. It won’t carry the full moon theme of a ball, but it won’t be so domineering either.

Plus, it will still carry out the function of not allowing the box to tip backwards.

This new one I’m starting is NOT going to be top heavy.

Thank you! I’m still torn about the finial… whether it should be a ball or spire, but otherwise I’m pretty pleased!

Thank you! I was really questioning trying to paint anything on it. I’m glad folks feel it turned out.

Thank you! The only thing that has me torn is the finial. It just doesn’t quite look right to me. The front feet off space where I could hide a weight. I might need to try that.

Love the FEET.
