Back in early July, my neighbor brought me some burl pieces from his mother’s yard from a tree that had been cut down the summer before. Whoever cut down the tree had little knowledge of or concern for the huge burl on the tree and just chopped it up with a chainsaw.

Still, the burl was big, and as I got my grinding/carving chops down, I was able to make a few centerpiece bowls out of the various abused pieces.

I did have one chunk that seemed unworkable as a bowl but, with my recent interest in trying to make burl boxes, I got an idea.

A local woodworker helped me devise a special clamp for squaring off the sides of my boxes with a Sawzall (yes, I’m stepping up from the pruning saw!)

I’m really pleased with how this box came together. My wife suggested the side hasp.

For the interior, I tried the Dead Flat Varnish again to keep the wood from darkening. After the varnish dried, I coated it with polyurethane (which again didn’t darken the wood because of the Dead Flat Varnish)

In the final picture, I put the box side by side with an earlier bowl from the same wood (which had been finished in just straight-up polyurethane). You can see how much lighter the inside declivity of the box is compared to the other piece’s bowl.

Let me know if you want the name of that Dead Flat Varnish.

Great results with the lighter finish! Darker is ok, but the lighter look gives the grain more dimension.

Still amazed at those chunks-o-wood you have available!

Thank you! I agree that the lighter looks better/reveals more.

And, yes, I got really lucky with friends starting to bring me wood.

Thanks! I started another box today, but might have to switch back to bowls for a bit after that.

Another nice burl box.
