This is another item ordered from last week’s craft sale- A rectangular yarn bowl that is 6” x 10 1/4” X 6 1/2” high. The lady had big yarn balls of heavy yarn and needed one this size and with a wider “J” slot.

This bowl is made from 3/8” maple plywood and has all the edges connected with lock miters. I added a handle in the back so it is easier to pick up.

It is finished with satin lacquer.

Cheers, Jim

That turned out very nice, don’t think I have ever seen one in a rectangle. Great job.

Now that’s different Jim, I bet you wouldn’t have made one of these without a pre-order

Looks good but.

Jim… A perfect size and shape for large Balls of yarn. I have watched ladies using Yarn as a child and fully understand the importance of a nice tidy Ball of yarn. The handle at the back is a good idea too, makes the whole process very portable. What is Satin Lacquer Jim? Is it a form of Varnish?

Regards…...Cliff.

Nice job Jim with the lock miters using plywood. She can store other things in there also.

Thanks for all the nice commnets,

Hi Bob. No I would not have made a rectangular one for a ball. I tried to talk her into a square one…but she insisted on this. I did make a prototype long rectangular one out of wood and PVC pipe for a skein of yarn. The first lady tried to pull the yarn off the outside of the skein and it tangled up. The lady I gave it to knew to pull the yarn out of the center of the skein and loved it.

Hi Eric. In return I hope she pays me!!

Hi Cliff. She said that her yarn ball now runs all over the room and gets caught on things. The Satin lacquer is spray can lacquer… only satin instead of gloss finish. It is a different base than poly or spar varnish which are true oil base products.I don’t think this big “bowl” would have looked good all shiny!!

Hi Dave. She can hide a wad of money under the ball of yarn. No one would think of looking there!!

Cheers, Jim

I like your choice of connecting joints! Never saw one of these made square, but then I’m not into yarn stuff.
