Had the opportunity to get into my supply of more seasoned burls. In the case of this one, “seasoned” meant some areas of rot, including inside what would be the bowl’s interior.

Using the grinder and some steel brushes, I was able to remove the rot, and I’m actually quite pleased with the “black rot stripes” now inside the bowl. It adds some character to a bowl whose burl markings are somewhat muted (at least for my tastes)

I knew this would work out to be a nice bowl because it already had a bowl like shape going in (which you can see in the before pic)

I’m slowly learning that if I’m brave enough to keep grinding down, the burl/gall patterns that reveal themselves become more complex/eye-pleasing. But, in the past, I have ground down to the point that I “grind through” which is a bummer. Of course, I call those intended mistakes and I make the error part of the project.

In this case, as I ground, I reached a point where the pattern wasn’t changing that much (but of course live with the idea that the most stunning patterns was just another thin layer or two beneath the surface)...I wanted to keep the shape of the bowl, so I stopped grinding and worked to showcase the black stripes of the bowl’s interior.

I probably have another application or two of polyurethane to go because the black/rot parts are, understandably, really soaking up the finish. I really want those black parts to shine.

See what you think.

I still have to venture out of my “clean and square” stock world and try some of these natural treasures that have been shaped over the years by the bugs and weather. Great to see you can find the beauty hidden behind the mask!

Yeah, for myself I’ve never met a right angle that I couldn’t make wrong… so these burls are right up my alley.

I often think the art was there all along, I’m just knocking away the debris.

Hi Van – Your project convinces me that you have the knowledge & equipment to make something of this chunk. Since the PM function here doesn’t allow photos or attachments, I’ll post two here.

Thank you! And, yes, my first pass of the grinder over the burl bark begins open those mystery chocolates!
