My effort for the 2021 Beer Swap (5th Annual!) and I was given the name of Keebler (aka Kevin)! Hmmmm… what to do?
My inspiration came to me while grocery shopping. I bought a whole bunch of Keebler cookie packs but this one (picture 2) seemed to call out to me. What could be more fun than a 4 1/4” Fudge Stripe Cookie Coaster?
I scanned a couple of them (while eating more than a couple! Research!!!) and then created a vector drawing to work with. I imported that drawing into Aspire which is a really great 3D design program. I ended up with a file (picture 3) for the basic cookie to use for creating G-code for my CNC machine. I also created a file for the fudge stripes to get the proper tolerances between the two parts but I couldn’t figure out any way to get them to look like smooth chocolate so I had to hand carve all 12 of them to get what I wanted.
Well, every stack of coasters needs something to keep them neat and orderly so I whipped up a 3D model of the world famous ‘Hollow Tree’ and added a Keebler sign. The best way to replicate tree bark in my opinion is to hand-carve the wood (It’s also faster than trying to cut it using the CNC). A little paint and… Viola!
I was done with all that thirsty work and ready to start sampling mass quantities of UP beers in order to provide Kevin with a nice variety of beers that I’m pretty sure aren’t available in the Lone Star State (picture 6). It wasn’t easy but one must make sacrifices for the sake of Art!!!

That Keebler holder, and the cookies are incredible Mike, Really nice work, and perfect for a guy with a nick of Keebler. So witty.

Thank you Jeff and Jim!

I had to hide them so my Mama didn’t eat them before I sent them out!

You never disappoint Mike :-) Your knack for coming up with creative and very personalized gifts for these swaps amazes me. These coasters are flat-out awesome :-) And the holder with the elves’ tree just pushes it over the top. Fantastic work bud!!!
