Spalted Bowl from Log to Bowl

Spalted Maple 8 1/2” x 2 1/2”
Friction Finish (Shellac/BLO/DNA)

The last few weeks I’ve been roughing out a lot of these bowls. As I was roughing this one out it seemed to be dry enough. So I went ahead and finished it out completely. This is from the log in one of the pictures. Only cut it up 2 weeks ago.

It’s beautiful. Amazing what “almost” rotted wood looks like. :-)

Thank you. That took about 7 months for that wood to sit for it to spalt like that.

thats insane grain,love the shape really highlights it.i had some silk tree,or mimosa wood that i left outside for several years.cut it up and no spalting at all,still soild.pretty wood though.

Thank you, I think there are trees that take to it and some that do not. For bowls, unless it is figured or crotched. Maple is pretty boring wood. So, when I get some straight pieces, I set them out for a while.
