On Friday the 13th I became a great great uncle to the first boy to born in our family in 30 years. He was born to my great niece so I guess that would make him my great great nephew! I wanted to make him his first rattles.

The one on the left is 4” diameter and 3/4 round maple with three steel balls in it.
The center bar bell one is 5 1/4” long and 1 1/4” diameter cherry and has 2 balls in each end.
The one on the right is 4 1/4” diameter and 1/2” round cherry with 2 balls in it.
I find that the steel balls that I cut out of some old ball bearings make a lot better noise than BB’s

They are 3 step buffed and Carnuba waxed for a finish.

Cheers, Jim

Nice set of rattles. Do the rings rattle too?

Congratulations on becoming a great great uncle. I guess Friday the 13th was a good luck day for your family.

I think great uncles are supposed to supply toy, you’re right on track with a couple nice ones.

Good looking set there Jim. Now how did you insert the ball bearings into the rings?

Congratulations on:

1. The new addition to the family

2. The great job on the toys

3. Your new title – although it is not Great Great Uncle – it should be FUNcle (for Fun – Uncle because you bring the toys!)

Thanks for sharing.

Good job.

I see how you got the bearings in the double ended rattle. Am assuming similar with the rings??

Maybe an adjustable circle cutting bit at couple of radii followed by a chisel??

He will be throwing those out of the crib next thing you know.

Awesome project Jim… And since it’s the first boy born into your clan in some time, way to start off doing your great great uncle duties and spoiling him rotten. It is a sacred duty after all…lol
