LIDDED BOX FROM SMALL LOG

I seem to be getting obsessed with Lidded Boxes. I am just started to get the hang of the hollowing process, without the wood flying off the Lathe or getting a sudden catch. The measuring is starting to make a lot more sense too. Some of my earlier attempts left not enough wood for either a Mortise or Tenon.
The Forstener Bits to make a hole in the centre are great to get the hollowing started. Then the BEDAN TOOL and the Square nose Scrapper are becoming my favourite tools for Lidded Boxes.
I usually try for a gloss finish, but also like the satin smooth matt finish. I will keep experimenting and reading up on methods.
This Time I applied a Friction Polish while the Lathe was spinning and for good measure, then gave it a rub with a Food Safe Wax….100% Natural Australian Beeswax and 100% Pure Carnauba Wax. Made in South Australia.
Once you rub it on there is no greasy feeling to it.
So who knows what Finish I will try next??? Its all good fun

THE DIAMETER IS 4 3/4 inches.
THE OUTSIDE HEIGHT IS 2 inches.
THE INSIDE DEPTH IS 1 INCH.

Kind regards to all Lumber Jocks…...Cliff.

Nice little box Cliff. I use to find the Bedan a little tricky at first and now I use it a lot. Nice finish too.

doubleDD Thanks Dave. Yes the Bedan is great. I agree it is tricky and can grab if the angle is not right.

Jim Jakosh. Jim, thank you. Yes the Bedan is great, I’m getting to understand the importance of holding it at the correct angle and not getting too greedy with each cut.
The new Forstener Bits I purchased recently and the Keyless Chuck are a dream to use also…....Regards….Cliff.

Eric. Thank you Eric. Much appreciated…...Regards…...Cliff.

Cliff, that really is a beautiful piece of timber and you’ve done a great job with the box. Excellent result.
It sure is fun playing with different materials, tools and finishes. Only problem is then deciding which you like best.

Thanks for sharing.

Bob

-- Bob, Western Australia, The Sun came up this morning, what a great start to the day. Now it's up to me to make it even better. I've cut this piece of wood 4 times and it's still too damn short.
