Project Information

I made this little step stool for my great granddaughter, McKinlee, so she can get into her "big girl" bed. She has to be lifted up every night so this should fix that.

This stool is made from all maple plywood It is assembled with only glue and dowels. There are screws in the hinges. I made her a "secret " compartment under the bottom step that she thinks is so cool.
The giraffes and the unicorn were cut in by Case Vander Mass from our guild on his CNC router, Thanks, Case !!!!!

She loves giraffes and unicorns!!

It is 14" wide, 13" high and 13" deep and finished with honey maple stain and satin poly.

Cheers, Jim

Jim, that's a nice stool and you know she will love the secret compartment. All kids like their own space. Mortised hinges and magnets are top notch. Mom may steal this one.

Hi Jim….It Looks FANTASTIC!!!!!! She will love the Step Stool. Great idea for the Secret Compartment!!!
The Outline of Giraffe and Unicorn is Superb…
I like the progress pictures. Glue and Dowels a great idea. What size magnets are they Jim? Are they rare earth top and bottom so they draw/pull to each other?
The eyes on the Giraffe and Unicorn look good too. is it paint or perhaps something glued in?

Lovely Project. Perfect for a young Child.

Regards…...Cliff.

Great job JJ...

Nice to see "traditional woodies" embrace their dark side of CNC/laser divergence. A spider or two on the first step, to step on, could have been a novel addition… just a thought.

Thank you all for the nice comments. I was going to use hardwood but I get all this great maple plywood for free so that is what I chose for this stool. I stained it to make the plies pop.

Hi Crowie. When she came into the shop to see it going together, she had to bring her mother down to see the animals!!

Hi Cliff. The 4 magnets are 1/2" rare earth N52 magnets and they pull that step down tight. I painted the routed shapes of the animals with brown paint and painted the eyes blue for her…I call her pretty blue eyes. She will take it home Tuesday when we have her for the day.

Hi Alex, I could never put a spider on the step..she'd never use it. She is really scared of any bugs…but that would have been cool idea to add that with a laser. CNC work sure enhance wood projects. If I tried to draw those animals, no one would recognize them!!!!!!!!!!

... I could never put a spider on the step..

Not knowing what she'd like it was just a conceptual suggestion… often there are creepy crawlies that kiddies are afraid of and a step on gesture may be psychologically beneficial… not that I'm condoning cruelty or profess to be a brain surgeon… it was just a thought before I started drinking.

Hi Alex, I know that. It is really neat what can be done with a CNC machine and I'd have one if I thought I was smart enough to run it. I have a pretty full load just with my manual machines and learning CNC would shut me down for all the other stuff I enjoy. Besides, I have lots of friends who have CNC router and lasers!!!!!!

Thanks Lew. I spoil her every chance I get. Grand parents are supposed to spoil the grand kids but great grandparents spoil them squared!!!!!!!

Cheers, Jim
