Maple bowl, 5 1/2” x 2” This guy has a lot of chatoyance! Really hard to a good photo. The thing is just glimmering. Just slightly moving the bowl the grain moves and changes color and glimmer… like it is 3D.

Ten coats of Friction Polish. (Boiled Linseed Oil/Shellac/DeNatured Alcohol.

Thank you. I kept getting this white blob in picture. Had my son, who knows what he is doing… still had problems getting it. You can see it best in the picture while it is still mounted on the lathe.

Thank you. It is tending to be my go-to-finish for bowls lately.

Nice job, I find stepping back and zooming in from a little farther away will most time get rid of the white blob you refer to. Also you might try taking a video while rotating the bowl. That might show the chatoyance better.

I’m an old photographer… 35mm… and I think I’d have problem capturing it with what I know.. let alone this new digital tech stuff. My son tried… who knows what he is doing and was confused. Wife took the bowl to work and I think she said she sold it.

Looks nice and bonus points for using the word chatoyance.
Well done.

That bowl looks great and you did a good job of capturing the chatoyance brought out by I’m guessing a lot of sanding and polishing. It make me want to get a good chuck for my lathe and start turning more than just spindle work.

I typically just take pictures with my phone which leaves much to be desired but I figure if I take enough some are bound to turn out ok. I sliced up some walnut crotch when I got my sawmill and must have taken over 100 pictures of the half dozen best pieces only to end up with 13 decent pictures and these two which were the best of the bunch, lighting is everything!
