Frames are "poplar" - one more

I had a poplar board that was particularly colorful. Asked my husband what project he thought would be a good match and he said a frame. So, I built him this frame. This is one to sit on a desk and has a picture of his pup Teddee chasing her ball on the Oregon coast a few years ago. Finished with Tried and True for a change (typically use General Finishes High Performance).

I hate it when I have a piece of wood, commonly used for structure, that displays nice figure or colors. Poplar is among the worst.
So like any good hoarder, I stash it away thinking “some day”.

Looks like we have a common ailment, and you have found a cure! 8^)

Proud “saver” (hoarder seems to have a negative feel!). The color was only on one end which was deep within my storage cart. Only when I pulled the whole board out for a “construction type” project did I see the colorful end. If course, no way I would use it for the original construction at that point!

Isn’t that like saying, “I hate it when I’m expecting a fast food burger and somebody gives me a steak. Filet Mignon’s the worst.”

Good work on the miters. The frame color compliments the blue in the photo nicely.

I’ll take the steak!

Pretty piece of poplar BB1! It is nicely showcased in this frame which showcases the pup! Thanks for sharing.

Novamr99 – haha

James – thanks. Dug through a stack of old photos and picked this for subject (dog pics are always welcome), color, and happy memory

Candy – thanks, I typically look thru the poplar stacks just in case there is a “pretty one” to sneak back into the shop for some yet to be determined project

Great looking project…

So much fun finding someting special in the unexpected and then acting upon it…

Well done…

Close!

Because if that was so, I’d have to ditch the soda and find a good beer, locate a steak knife and find some taters…

The problem is you need a board for the bottom of a trash can rack and you reach for some old cabinet plywood. Turns out the back side is figured walnut. Do you use it anyway or drop what you are doing to drive 150 miles to get some more cheap plywood?

So Yes I hate it when….. 8^)

Wonderful frame, great job! Can I ask where did you get the hardware to hold the photo and backing into the frame? I need a source!

Splintergroup,

Sounds like you’re complaining about drinking a good beer vs. soda. Taters might be nice but if you weren’t getting fries already, a moot point. You don’t need a steak knife, it’s a filet mignon.

And if you can’t find an alternative material closer than 150 miles because you can’t bear to use what’s in hand, you deserve the drive.

You shouldn’t hate it when things exceed your expectations. Learn to enjoy them. :)

mtnwild – thanks, I love unique pieces

Splintergroup – haha…so much to deal with…lol (your “extra” bin is nicer than mine!)

bugradx2 – I get the fasteners on Amazon. My last batch wasn’t great – some holes are undersized for the screws included. Also, tend to have to loosen with screwdriver as have to tighten firmly otherwise I find them to not hold the “closed” position. Still, they are my “go to” for frames.

Here’s the amazon info:

Yes Novamr, two parts to the problem. I love getting the nice wood bonus surprise, but I do hate the drive to replace the lost wood. I could use the nice piece as originally intended, but then I’d feel guilty and hate myself.

That is two hates for one love 8^)

You are correct about the steak knife, I could go all caveman on it!

BB, give it time! It kinda acts like a woodworkers IRA.
