My Tongue Drum...drum roll please

Firstly …yes Tongue Drums do grow on trees!

In fact this one grew on an Australian Red Ironbark Gum tree.
Then was cut up for building stumps used in an Queenslander home/house.
Then they were unceremoniously dumped on the footpath as waste, due to being replaced by steel posts
Along comes some “loonie” woodworker and hauls them back home.

After reading about Tongue Drums I decide to build a few.

The construction process is documented in a blog

The tools used
1 x large circular saw
1x Table saw
1 x jointer
1x thicknesser
1x drum sander
1 x Router
Various hand sanders (which incidently are locked away now so nobody pinches them)

Titebond III
A few screws
6 x Super Balls (there were more but check the blog as to what happened to them)

Acknowledgments :-
Gnarlyerik
Crowie
Carmichael Plans
and lots of other LJs providing moral support along the way, (again check the blog for their valuable dialogue)

I wish somebody would dump some of that along my footpath.

I’d like to build one of those, but it’s in line behind all the other things I need to build.

i gotta say rc you hit a homer with this,at least until the duck grabs the ball right before it goes over the fence.i agree about that red gum, gorgeous wood.so if dont mind maybe ship over a hundred bd ft or so for a good friend.of course with shipping costs and slow ship times i wont see it until next summer and cost me a grand or so.hey never mind.so now the big question…..........how does it play ?

Shit rc, you’ve drummed up a great looking box with a peephole for the contents… if you cant find, or bimanually wield, two sledgehammers.

Very interested in hearing you play… the box… that bloody box! Seriously, does it make reasonable notes? Can’t remember you mentioning it.
Just stand on a corner and busk… rc, you could be the next Red Cheeran…

So… Off your arse and make a video… it can’t be any worse than some of my crap… also it’ll let the world hear your infectious laugh… and I don’t mean any disrespect with that, it’s a please to hear your appreciation of what may be humorous.

Hell, in the future, if your internet/telephone goes out you can drum up some messages… and cordless to boot… with the slots on top for hardcopy replies. Just don’t sign up with Telstra and you won’t need to climb that tree to get good reception.

Now for those dongers... an octopus may be disappointed and 3 kids may beat each other shitless to get to use it… but, as a Plan B, you can use it as a Chupa Chup display stand.

PS. Not impressed with the box in your last picture (gallery #6)... it lacks a lid!

If it doesn’t work, you can call it bar-a-tone!

Post the video with sound to YouTube (super easy) and just leave a link to it here.

Beautiful box.

-- Huh? Whadaya mean it ain't "measure once cut twice"?
