I slapped together some pictures so my buddy Pottz has something to look at while others are probably vacationing somewhere cool. This is another version of my last project with different woods.

This is canarywood on the outside and tiger maple on the inside. The top and bottom are quartersawn white oak. I used walnut for the bands around both.

I’m not sure which I like better, but this one has a more useable space.

I like the 2 layer finger joints.

Great detail on the joinery! What was your method?

Thanks guys, I’m glad you like it.

Jim, all I did was glue 2 contrasting woods together and then cut my box/finger joints. I think it creates an interesting look. It ends up looking complicated, but it couldn’t be easier. Give it a shot.

Nice two-layer finger joint. I had to look at it a few times before my brain said, “Oh, yeah! That’s pretty simple!”

I may have to do a two-layer dovetailed corner next time I need a box for something.

Thank you pottz and LRM

LRM, that made me laugh because that is how I read it too. I went back and read it again. I know Pottz wouldn’t ever mean it that way, he is always positive.

Thanks Dave, I bet that would look great. I haven’t done any dovetail joints on any of my projects. I cut one by hand to see what it was like and it came out better than I thought it would. I’ve been struggling to find something I feel like building. Maybe dovetails will help me snap out of it.

Really like the joinery. Very neat way to make the finger joints pop.

John, I cut them by hand for all sorts of things. After doing 60-ish boxes, with four dovetailed corners on each, I feel like I’m fairly competent with dovetails now, but I still keep practicing. I think it was Chris Schwarz who said that everyone has some number of bad dovetail joints in them, and the only way to get them out of your system is to cut joints and let the bad ones out.

Anyway, I bet they’ll look good coming from you. Have at it!
