My 8yr old boy asked me for a “sledge hammer” to use in the shop with me. By that he meant a mallet like the ones I use. So we set about making one with him helping on every step. He helped cut, drill, sand and glue up his new mallet and is pretty proud of it. It’s made of maple with a padauk wedge. Simple blo finish. Thanks for looking.

Thanks Duck. He had a ton of fun doing it. I’m sure he is already planning his next project.

A fine mallet it is! Great smile, such fine shop buddies are a treasure!

Looks great, Eric. Curious question: Is this the child for whom you made the workbench 5 years or so ago?

Yep! Sure is! It was closer to 6 1/2 years ago if I am counting right.

Then (him playing with the mallet he wanted one like)

Him at his workbench now..

Time to build him a bigger boat I think lol.

I had to go back and look. You posted the workbench (https://www.lumberjocks.com/projects/107655) in November, 2014.

Eric, I think the young man should have his own LJ sign in!

Great project, the payoff is the smile!

I’m so jealous! I think it’s great that he has stuck with it, most kids just want to play on the computer.

That’s one nice looking mallet I wouldn’t mind using myself.
