As you can see, this is not a new project, or a fancy one.

I would not have thought to post it except for the fact that my wife tells me a least twice a month how much she likes these simple little things.

A couple of years ago, she had asked for small cutting boards for Christmas, and I said I would make her some… but Christmas Eve I realized that I had not.

So I went out to the shop and found a little board of pecan that I had sliced from firewood on my bandsaw a few years earlier. Through the planer a few times and across the jointer (so they will stand on edge), ;then I penciled a cut line freehand and took it to the bandsaw. The ends I radiased on the bandsaw just using my hand as a pivot. A little trip to the oscillating spindle sander, a quick roundover and Merry Christmas.

What the photos show is a couple years of daily use, including a recent strawberry.

It’s easy and she likes them.

The original board was tapered in width, so one board is 4 3/4 and the other is about 5 1/8. I would prefer wider myself, but my wife says they are just right.

Honestly that’s a great idea. Never thought of doing one in that shape but it would be handy having a handle on it like that and allow you to slice longer stuff as well.

when it comes to cutting boards simple is all you need, and if wife is happy and by the look of use id say it’s a win.

Paul, and they are the right size so they get used very much. Good idea. And this Christmas have one kid help make a present, you might be surprized. Hal

Thanks for your comments guys!

Recycle and Splinter, I don’t think this was my original idea. I must have seen it somewhere, but I can’t remember. I was mostly trying to have a handle and not waste wood.

OG2, Thanks for your comments. All you years as a 5th grade teacher make your comments about kids in the shop something I’ll listen to!

B81, thanks.

pottz, I have been tempted to make one or more of those fancy boards, but we don’t have room in our busy kitchen for things only to look at. No matter how pretty, they would have to be used. So, I agree. Simple is best – at least for us.

JCamp, Thanks for the first comment. I haven’t posted a project in quite a while because I rarely finish anything and when I do it’s nothing special, but I thought this was something other regular guys could knock out in one quick session and, depending on the tastes of there wives, might have similar results.

DT3!? Who’da thunk it?!

I’m sure it’s almost the most primative project posted today.

I saw a very nice pair of cutting boards posted by somebody else.

But Thanks anyway, to whoever determines that.

And hey, this would have been my mother’s 93rd birthday.

And I want to remind you other Americans, also Flag Day.
