Just a simple cross I designed years ago for my first communion students. This cross is made of yellow birch wrapped in cherry quarter banding. The 1/8” inlaid strips are walnut. This cross is 3/4” thick. The banding stands 1/8” proud of the face, giving a tiered look.

Very nice job. I bet that banding took some time.

This particular cross is 8-1/2” wide x 11-1/2” tall. Yes, this is constructed using a half lap joint. A keyhole slot is routed in for hanging. When making these I typically use a light colored wood, such as maple or birch. I have used walnut and wenge for the inlaid strips, along with cherry, makore and sapele for the perimeter banding. I have made this style of cross in a larger dimension, however I have concluded that this size looks, proportionally, the best.
