This is a bird made of walnut that I carved. After looking at the blank, I glued another chunk of walnut on so that there would be enough wood for the tail, but that left a seam, which caused “fun” when carving, as well as looking a little weird. So I painted the bird black with iron black milk paint, then a couple coats of shellac (shellac sticks to anything, and anything sticks to shellac), then added a splash of yellow and red enamel on the wings. Then finally a few coats of shellac.

This is closer to “right off the knife” than most of my birds so far. I didn’t sand away most of the knife marks. But I did sand away a little of the paint, thinking I kinda liked the way that looked.

I’m not entirely happy with it, Don, but my sweetie loved it. It’s a lot easier to fill up the house with stuff I’ve made when she thinks it’s cool!

Nicely done Dave, and the wing color gives it the added touch.

Yes that a good thing when the sweetie likes the projects.

Leaving knife marks looks like feathers – good job

Actually, I like the “right off the knife” appearance, provides a handcrafted appearance.

Nice, Dave.
I once did a red-wing blackbird carving:

But, it was part of this flock of other birds:

There were three of his friends mixed in. The others were blue jays and summer tanagers.

Thanks, Oldrivers! I have four birds in progress in various places, so tat a minimum those will get finished up at some point. Kiln-dried birch is the biggest challenge to carve of the batch.

Thanks, Splint!

Thanks, Tom! I’m still learning, but I find it interesting how much I can do with just a knife.
