I received a request from a customer for a Leprechaun bottle stopper. Here are some progress photos.

I traced my patterns onto the block of wood using graphite paper, then cut it out on the bandsaw.

I’ve started rounding off the cutout and getting the general shape the way I want it.

The right side is shaped but no details yet.

...and the same for the left side.

In the next photo, I’ve gotten the shape correct, and have some of the details carved in.

The carving is complete. Just a little cleanup of the fuzzies and erasing the pencil marks then on to painting.

You can see in side view photo how I have recessed the cork about 1/4 inch into the carving. This is done with a 1.25 inch forstner bit, followed by a 3/4 inch deep 3/8 inch diameter hole in the center of the recess for the dowel that holds the cork on. The advantage of this is that, from the front, the cork is hidden by the bottom of the beard.

Feel free to down load the photos and create your own pattern from them.

I like it….but the first image off the bandsaw with the blocky shape and eyes is a bit creepy.
