Project Information

My Son will be presenting this conceptual sculpture to his overly demanding Art Teacher today as his final project for class. Each of the Kids in his class had to choose an exhibit from the Guggenheim Museum and try to copy it as best they could. Most of the kids chose painting, but my Son came to me and said, hey, Dad, you think we could make this sculpture in wood? (The original is made of metal, dont know who the artist is).

I said, of course we can, no problemo.

Together, we planned the joinery and how to connect the two sections, the base, the finish, etc.

He cut all the parts on the table saw. It was his first time rippìng stock, had only used a sled before; and of course, there was that one heart-stopping moment (for daddy) when his left hand was being where it shouldnt be, but all went well in the end. He used a jig to cut the mitres, safer that way.

The piece is made of Linden wood, aka Lime, aka Basswood. And he ebonized that with India Ink. I did the spray laquer finish, and taught him how to spray a finish correctly.

There are few minor imperfections, but he doesnt see that sort of thing like I do, and he is happy with the result.

I am pretty sure his Teacher will be delighted to see something other than not so great paintings, and he will get an A+++.

The piece is a 12cm cube.

Thanks for viewing!

And have a GR8 day!

Very cool and I'm sure the teacher will appreciate deviating from a 2D copy of a painting.

Wow…The father…now the son. What a great and fulfilling project! I hope he's as proud of his work as you are obviously proud of him. ; )

WW…You once said something to the affect that I was so upbeat (or something like that) I must be a great Dad. Well I had my moments, but my kids and I don't have past moments to cherish like this.

You sir, truly must be a great Dad.

Great to see Daddy'os influence in future generations kicking in. Interesting project assignment they received!

I recall a story about some modern art exhibit in a museum, basically a bunch of aluminum cans strewn about. Very expensive, but the night janitor thought it was just a mess left behind by some gallery booth construction crews so he cleaned it up and tossed it.

True or not, I'm always reminded of it when seeing some of those wacky paintings and glue-gun creations.

I however can appreciate the maddening construction challenges when building these sculptures. A great intro for your kid (future chair building 8^)

Good to see you again darken the LJ door Brian!

Very nice project Brian, I'm so jealous when I see fathers and sons working together in the shop. I guess they don't have video games in Spain. LOL

I have an 18 year old that made an outdoor rocking chair with me for school, and that was like pulling teeth to get him to finish it. He can play videos from morning till night if we would allow it. I wish he had an interest in woodworking so I could teach him a few things while I'm still around.

A huge collective thank you - to ALL you guys for commenting!!!

My Son, Theo, read all your comments and I am sure those gave him a fine boost for his efforts on this project.

I am also sure that he is not going to follow in his Papa´s working-class-hero footsteps - he is smarter, and he plays guitar, while I was just a lowly frontman, ie., singer of sorts.

Again, thanks, guys, means alot!!!!

Looks like an A+++ to me Brian.

When I studied art in NYC I would visit MoMA, The Metropolitan and the Guggenheim etc. almost daily. I always wanted to skate down the spiral ramp in the Guggenheim.

What the title of that sculpture?

What is the base made of? Looks like stone or granite.
