After a couple months of focusing on skills, I feel like I’m starting to make some small progress. This Ruler Gauge is the latest tool I’ve made myself, it is a simple project yes, but it was a fun one, and it will definitely be a useful one.

I had a spare steel ruler, and also a thin, 1mm aluminium bar which perfectly matched the thickness of the ruler. I figured a block of Walnut with a thin aluminium line running through the centre would be really good looking.

To dress it up a bit, I tried a little embellishment on the screw heads. I filed the Philips head screws into quarters, which left 4 semi circles on each one. After inserting them, I filled the gaps with Starbonds glue and sawdust. I like the look of the screw heads, I don’t love it, but I like it. Definitely worth the extra work on a small piece like this as a bit of a test.

Overall, I do love the project, I think it looks a treat. Useful and attractive, I’m really happy with it.

Nice, I like the details at that small scale. Might have to copy…
