A dresser from a Mike Pekovich design, rendered in black walnut, wenge, and hard maple. The interior was finished with shellac, the exterior with shellac, tung oil and wax.

We love the way the wenge combines with the walnut, but as I am sure everyone knows, wenge is so dense and heavy that it is a bear to work with, especially the dovetails. I did all of the dovetails by hand as through dovetails, but on the draw fronts I added a 1/8th piece of wenge make them half-blind. The mortises were cut with a mortising machine, but I did the tenons by hand as well. The drawer sides, back and bottom were made with hard maple much of which has curl, which lends character to the piece.

This project took about 60 hours to complete over many weeks.

Thanks for looking.

Extremely great chest. The finish on the wood is really nice. Sharp chisels for those dovetails I bet.
Good work.

Thanks much for the kind words. Yes, the chisels are sharp, and so is the dovetail saw. But then, chisels aren’t much use unless they’re sharp :)

I used blue tape to lay out the pins in the wenge drawer fronts. It’s impossible to see pencil lines and trying to transfer the tails to the drawer fronts using only a marking knife doesn’t work because the grain has a mind of its own. I also did the initial dovetails on the drawer fronts as through dovetails, and then laminated a 1/8” thick board on the drawer front to create a half-blind dovetail that also hides the groove holding the drawer bottom.

Very find workmanship and a beautiful end result. 60 hours? Man, I wish I could work half that fast.

Sharp looking piece and a clever solution for creating the dovetails.
