A family member asked for a red bookcase. Beefy poplar stiles with mortise and tenon construction. Dominos in the plywood. Solid walnut top. The finish is General Finishes Tuscan Red, which went on smoothly. It is called milk paint, and may be a little soft for a bookcase. I might have to give it a top coat of sealer. 14 inch deep shelves, 35 inches wide. 4 feet tall. The plywood is “radiata” pine, which has nice thick plies, but seemed not quite as stable as baltic birch. 35 inches is a long span so the shelves are reinforced with 1 1/4 inch poplar. We shall see if it works.

That has a classy “parlor” look to it with the dark red and walnut top, nice! The top alone is gorgeous work!

One of the appeals of milk paint is it will wear in such a way as to give the piece a more antique look.

Personally I’d “live” with it for a few years and see how it evolves before committing to a top coat.

The walnut and red contrast quite nicely.

Love the color, and with the Walnut it adds a richness.

The deep panel is very nice, sets the piece off.
