Spartan Helmet - faux ancient bronze finish

When I posted this Spartan helmet carving a week or so ago, One of the comments mentioned that they thought it would look good with a faux bronze finish. I had never heard of that and looked up pictures of authentic bronze helmets to get a feel for what they looked like.

I used basswood again, and worked it to the shape I wanted. Then I sanded it completely smooth. Then, I took a wire brush like you use to work loose paint off the outside of your house, and hit is straight down into the soft wood to make the little pin holes to make it look like pitted bronze. I then used a flat black spray paint as a base coat.

The bronze is a powder from Pearl Ex called Antique Bronze. I followed the technique demonstrated on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yga85P45vMQ by rubbing a finger in paste wax, working a little powder in it, and then rubbing that onto the wood.

It was hard getting a good picture of how it looks as it catches the light and reflects very differently in different light. The first three pictures that look almost gold (more yellow) were taken in my shop, and the last two, with the deck chair background, were taken outside, in the direct afternoon sun. I am still debating whether or I should apply another finish on top of the wax as a sealer, since the wax does not cover the black.

Many thanks to @BigTiny for the suggestion!

I think even the Spartans would be impressed. Great job!

Very excellent faux patina!

I’d certainly turn around and walk (run) away if I saw that face heading my way 8^)

Well done.

re: should apply another finish on top of the wax as a sealer? I would add a couple light coats of Renaissance wax to preserve the finish.
