I made my first wood worm gear back in 2013.

Last week I had to make another one for a new project. I searched YouTube videos, and did not find any about how to make a wood worm gear…..........so I made one myself :)

Here is a link to the YouTube video I made about how to make a wood worm gear.

I just about have my new project done with a 20:1 gear reduction ratio worm and spur gear. I will post it here once I get it completed.

Thanks

Neat DM, however, I might play chicken and opt for a 3D printed version if I ever need one… Your SU helped there.

BTW. That ruler reminds me of Mother Superior in primary school back in the late 50’s.

I think I had that old wood ruler in grade school, so it is circa 1965 :)

Very interesting. It started making sense when I realized that the Sketchup templates were to be used to layout the helix of the gear. Thanks for posting.

After looking at the video for drawing a worm gear in Sketchup, I decided to drop the 3D model into VCarve just to see if I could make it carve a decent 2 sided version on a CNC ( I don’t have a rotary holder for my CNC). Below is a simulation of the tool paths. I might have to see if it will actually yield a workable worm gear, though carving it by hand will undoubtedly be faster.
