Wenge Elephants

Here are two elephants I made in the style of a baby toy out of African Wenge wood. I used an SVG design from the Shaper Hub and cut the main shape with my Shaper Origin before then using my router table to roundover the edges. I then used the Shaper Origin with a 60* V-groove bit to carve my signature, which is simply my initials and the month/year appearing on the bottom of one foot. Finished in simple Walrus Oil brand mineral oil and Daddy Van’s brand Lavender & Beeswax furniture finishing wax.

Those look really nice! Does machining them that way help for splinters? I’ve only worked wenge once, and it was quite the splintery process.

Steven, here is how I kept splintering down.

Cutting it out, the Shaper Origin allows me to make multiple shallow passes and then a finishing pass. The results are phenomenal.

When it comes to rounding over the edges, I use several steps in roundover bits. In order:

1/16” roundover
1/8” roundover
3/16” roundover
1/4” roundover

I think that’s where I stopped on the elephants, but I have many more sizes all the way up to 3/4”

I am fairly certain that if I had not gradually increased the roundover that it would have splintered like crazy.

I usually wear gloves when handling the unprocessed Wenge because I know the splinters go septic within a few hours.

Thanks! I’ve only worked one piece of wenge so far, but I have another piece that I will eventually use. Not as nasty as black palm, though. At least when that tiny little sliver festers its easier to find…
