I went into this Surprise Swap planning to do a bit of marquetry but, due to circumstances, I had to give up on that idea – though I did purchase some pretty cool veneers so that will happen at some point in the future.

Plan B was doing a bit of inlay work but I think I was a bit ambitious and perhaps not as careful as I should have been. If you look at picture 3, you will see the v-carved base of birch and the female insert in walnut. Everything was going along pretty well until I misprogrammed the CNC while removing the excess walnut and drove a 1/2” end mill about 0.1 into the base (It was late and I was tired!)...
So it was on to Plan C (Thank God, there are 26 letters in the alphabet! I thought I might need them all!)
Maple coasters with cherry lion inlays! I already knew my ‘victim’... Oops! I meant recipient!!! Cherry was chosen for its ability to hold nice tight edges through the milling process. I still need to work on my methods a bit to get tighter inlays.
Then I decided to make a nice carved Birch holder with a 3D Lion on each end (picture 1). This was carved using a 1/16” tapered ballnose bit. A little scary to see that tiny point working in that hardwood but the upside is that there was no sanding or touch-up work required after taking it off the machine.
I was going to make the deadline!!!! But…
The Friday before ship date I get this crazy idea to make my swap recipient a bonus item to sweeten the pot and made him a State of Ohio box, complete with buckeye artwork.

I also discovered that the old bookbinder’s press I had picked up at a yardsale made a really great inlay press! I need to clean it up a bit but it has earned a place in my woodshop!

Let’s hope The Donald was not right when he claimed all presses lie!

Dave,
I did some horsetrading to get that press but I’m glad I did! It is sure a handy gadget to have!

Duck,
As a matter of fact I went through all Recycle’s project posts and the Cat stood out!

Thanks Jim, Hairy and Ivan! Another successful swap in the books! Check out the rest of the projects! Some pretty cool stuff!!!

LBD – I found that little girl on the street – about 5 or 6 months old and gonna have a litter in a couple weeks.
the girl on your chair appears to be one heck of a big calico

She was a small one and about 10/11 months old… but that was about 50 years ago… hell that’d make her 51…
