Granddaughter asked me to make a kazoo of wood. Because of my interest in acoustical instruments, I kind of went a little crazy making eight all together. I was hoping to dial in the best “tone wood” but it made absolutely no difference. However you may think I’m a little wacky but “In the Jungle” sure sounds better with the ones made with Wenge. . . . The sound is totally dependent on the resonator/diaphragm made from cereal box material along with something for the “reed”/membrane. After punching the smaller(1/2”) hole in the box material, you apply spray adhesive and stick down the sack material before punching the larger(3/4”) hole. Shallow hole in wood requires a forstner bit and nerves of steel.
I tried various substrates but couldn’t really decide if a Rockler sack or a Home Depot one was best. I guess it’s just a matter of tonal preference. One more pun: try making one because you can’t blow it.
Thanks for looking

Neat little project. And I bet kids love it.
Can you add a sound clip of “In The Jungle”
Musical instruments are on my bucket list if builds, door harps look neat. What are some of the the woods to make a good sound board?

Nice!!
I tried to make a kazoo and failed miserably. I was using 35mm film negative as the reed, I also tried wax paper. Not to mention how much better yours look.
I should try again…

They look good. You should be a video so we can hear what they sound like. I’ve never tried building a Kazoo.

Those are good looking instruments.
Are there plans for these?

The link below better illustrates the making of resonators

And the link below is for Eric to hear the sound. I thought I was through building kazoos but it’s back to the shop to build a double resonator !
