Welcome to Lumberjocks. You will find a lot of information and help here. In many cases is helps to do a search for your topic first and then ask your questions. Finishing problems are a very frequent item and you will find the responses can vary a lot.

On this project I notice you joints have a few small gaps so I would suggest your first fill them with some wood filler. Famowood is my favorite. It comes in various wood colors and yours appears to be red oak. Make sure what ever you use is stainable and dries hard (some stay soft). After you have sanded it you can apply a stain if you like. Then sand lightly (320 grit) and apply a wipe on varathane according to the instructions.
