Project Information

Inspired by LJ Bradgkm's version I decided to make my own. After I got it close to the same as his I sent a picture to my sister (his wife). She liked it but muttered something about patent infringement to which I replied "It's not infringement if I make improvements." My first thought was to add a pencil cup holder that would sit behind the iPad and hold a stylus. Eventually ditched that idea. I did add a slot in front to hold the phone. That entailed making a jig to secure (with carpet tape) the now round board to in order to safely run it through the table saw again. Major improvement was adding a handle! I had done some spindle turning practice on a glued up piece of pine that ended up looking somewhat handle-ish. I shortened it a bit and cut a tenon on the end to fit into a mortise recessed into the base, back of center. I wanted to embellish it so got some acrylic paint and little brushes. The giraffe head is a doodle I've done for years on paper so I added it and some flowers and bushes. One of my old US pins covers the tail stock indent from the lathe. The handle is wrapped top and bottom with cordage secured with an entire bottle of Gorilla Glue. A metal hook was added to hold headphones. With the exception of the paint, glue and finish everything is stuff I had on hand. It was finished in two pieces with 3 coats of Rustoleum rattle can lacquer. After drying the post was glued and screwed to the base and adhesive cork applied to the bottom.

I really like how this turned out. The handle makes it so easy to pick up and move. It's kinda self leveling. The extra slot allows for different viewing angles. It has a giraffe on it. What more could a girl want!?
Stats 12 3/4"tall, 9 3/4" diameter, the slots are 3/8"deep X 3/8"- 1/2" wide (the phone required a wider slot due to its case).
EDIT: more pics

Nice job and you definitely improved it a bit. The only problem is you didn't show the painting very well. It looks like you have another talent you are hiding from us.

Cool idea and I'm sure the LJ you were inspired by doesn't have a patent on his.

I like how you added the the center handle, it adds more support.

What type of gorilla glue did you use for the cord?

Just so you know, "improvements" don't necessarily mean you haven't infringed the patent. And yes, I am an attorney, although I don't specialize in patent/copyright law.

Pretty cool, Candy. That covers all the bases to store the needed items to go with the phone!!

Thank you Monte. I wanted it to be 'mine'!
Thanks Dave.
Good eye Gary! I can't say for sure if it's mine or Jim's. Whatever, I claimed it!
Thanks Tony!
Thank you Butcher.
Andre I think talent is well distributed in this house! Thanks for commenting.
Thank you Bandit.
Thanks Alex.
Thank you John D. I will add more pics to the text.
Thanks Tony. 4 years reserves, 3 years active duty. You're welcome.
James the 'patent' comment came from my sister, busting my chops. LOL the glue was the Gorilla Super Glue Micro Precise Liquid. 5.5 grams. I replaced it with a very non-precise tipped 3.75 ounce bottle.
Thank you SG. I was having fun with the paint trying to not get too serious and not go overboard.
Thanks Jack.
Aww Rob you're gonna make me blush!
Thanks Mark!
Howard, let's just keep that between us. My sister doesn't need to know, OK? ;-)
Couldn't have made DT3 without you all!
Jim, I was trying to make it versatile!
