This piece represents lots of firsts for me
- first time with no paint to cover mistakes
- first time using varnish
- first time edging plywood
- first time using rough lumber
- first non-shop furniture drawers
- first time using sketchup

Made lots of mistakes but ultimately looks good and learned so much.

Also the reason for the half top drawer is so my wife’s desk drawer can be pulled out.

The lift from the legs presents a nice floating perspective; it adds a lot of interest.

Where its pictured makes it looks like it wants to be a side table.
Maybe a variation of the design could make a nice side table.

I don’t get out much, but I’ve not seen that design before. I really like it, so if it is entirely your brainchild, congrats.

On the first’s, that is a for sure Congrats, and so many on one project, and it appears it all worked out pretty well. That’s a win in itself.

Artful use of the wood grain, makes for a nice visual.

Nice work.

Mistakes come with the territory. Remember, the Master has failed more times than the apprentice has even tried. Looks great! keep up the good work, and welcome aboard.

Thanks for all the supportive comments. Really appreciate it.

Now that you mention it – the silhouette definitely reminds me of a certain style of side/sofa table I’ve seen that is usually 2x deeper than wide and there is like a ‘shelf’ over the top back half. For some reason back in my college days all the used furniture that came with an apartment had one of those side tables. I think some of my cabinet design elements definitely would make for a nice version of that. Once my kid is old enough not to destroy everything in our den that might be on the table (pun intended). I actually milled a really nice spalted maple last year from my property that i’m saving specifically to replace the furniture in that room in a few years.

While this was definitely a product of my imagination (and my wife’s requirements) I’m sure after watching so much youtube content you’d find bits and pieces of other people’s designs in there. The legs were definitely inspired by a few of my favorite pieces.

Looking forward to posting more projects. Might have to go back a few years to find some of the earlier ones.

Have your say...
