A sign for the doorway to my shop.

I came up with this quotation quite some time ago. I used alder as it’s relatively soft, stable and easier to rout with the very fine bits I used with my Dremel tool. I found the router base at StewMac, a company that caters to Luthier’s. I formatted quotation and printed it off my computer, then transferred it to the wood using carbon paper. After that I went to work with my Dremel tool & router base. Why yes, I do know a CNC would be faster as would a laser printer. I wanted to hand carve this but found out that I totally suck at carving. After I finished with the router I used a really cheap wood burner set burn the background and the letters. I also used a propane torch to char the outside edges of the board. Some may think I’m behind the times, but I’ll just keep with my tired old school ways. I prefer the more hands on approach.

It now hangs above the door to my shop and should make for some interesting comments.

Looks good, you don’t need a lot of high dollars toys to perfect your work, sometimes it is a lot more gratifying to work it by sleight of hand anyway, job well done.

That is great Bob! The background really makes the letters show well. I like it a lot! I agree with you about the CNC, they are faster but yours looks perfect old school style. I do have a laser engraver but use it to transfer the pattern on the wood or leather then do the rest by hand. I need to look at a router base like that. Would sure be nice compared to my other small router.

That sign is a truth. Just looked at your projects and very creative and eclectic. Havin’ fun looks like to me…......

Mel, after the fact, yeah I thought I should have made it a little bigger. By then I was to far into it and I just gave up. It will have to do for the present. I’m tired of struggling with PITA projects. I want to make a few things that will be confirmed easy projects I know will turn out perfect, boxes…simple boxes! I need to do some fishing, simple fishing with just worms, nothing to difficult. oh yeah, and some beer, cheap beer!
