Haven’t been keeping up with posting some of my projects so I thought I’d combine my last two years of holiday ornament gifts for friends.
In 2019, I made a few NFL team logo intarsia ornaments. I cut these on my scroll saw and shaped them by hand. There’s no way I could have yielded such detail on my CNC for the patriot’s head. It’s nice to be able to attack projects old school or new school. The Patriots logo was made from bloodwood, blue pine, blue mahoe and aspen. The Redskins logo (yes, Redskins, this was before the whole WFT business!) was made from bloodwood, yellowheart and aspen.
This past year I went new school and made a batch of monogrammed tree ornaments. The base wood was black walnut and the monogram inlay was holly. On one of the pieces I tried silver gilding for the first time. This ornament was for a retired Army vet friend and I wanted to capture that in his piece. Metallic silver paint just didn’t have much vibrance even with several coats. So I tried silver gilding, and that does capture the light at many different angles and it does sparkle.
Stay healthy and safe everyone, until next time!

Great job Joel. Those folks getting the ornaments are indeed fortunate.

Good work, Joe. But as a Bronco fan, I feel compelled to warn you that your well-made Patriot ornament is likely to catch a Christmas tree on fire!
-- Cats, beer and wood...perfect.
