First, credit where it’s due: This design is from FixThisBuildThat.

This is the 3rd version I’ve made. It’s made of walnut, movingui and padauk and finished with a couple of coats of Odie’s Oil. It was a little over 9” tall and about 5.5” square at the base. The movingui is actually a little darker/honey colored than the picture.

I decided to add a couple, small, different design elements this time consisting of the splines and the top. I’m relatively happy with it though in hindsight wish I’d have added splines to more of the squares.

The top was made by scrollsawing out the sun design, adding a small padauk circle and filling the void with copper pigmented EcoPoxy liquid plastic. What I found cool was that the epoxy soaking in caused the rays of the sun to be outlined – something totally unexpected, but I was really happy to see. I’ll have to experiment to understand whether that would happen with different woods or whether it was a function of the wood and pigment choices.

A fun project that went to my sister in law for her birthday.

Interesting design. What kind of light? LED?

It has an E26 bulb base. You could use fluorescent, LED, incandescent,.. Given the lower profile, I went with a low profile LED.

As a couple of folks asked to see it lit, I added a picture. Who would have guessed folks might have wanted to see a lamp actually lit? :)
