Project Information

Okay, not a finished project but pretty much finished joinery, none of which will show when the project is finished.
I'm building a cabinet for our kitchen and it will be covered with Louis XV period marquetry so I decided to take the plunge and go for the appropriate joinery.

I LOVE this joinery! Everything is totally locked together and feels rock solid already even without glue.

The pictures show the assembly from the 18th Century "IKEA flat pack" to the fully assembled carcase with the most used tools featured on top.
The last one is the model I'm using for the shape although my marquetry will be different, a little more complex. :)

My guide for the joinery is this video of a chest of drawers by Jean Henri Riesener deconstructed. It's not exactly like mine (it's Louis XVI) but my joinery is pretty faithful to it.

Shipwright, When you post some of your projects you rock me back in my chair! You never cease to amaze me and make so jealous of your skills and talent. Is the carcass wood your using beech? It has the looks of beech in some of the photos. I totally intend to watch all of your videos. Your amazing. That piece is one of the most stunning I've seen here in a very long time.

That is really awesome.
I saw it and immediately thought "I'd love to make that."
Then I looked some more and though "I could never make that.". lol

Another masterpiece in the making! Looking forward to watching progress. The Waddesdon videos are very informative.

You sure go to extreme to keep the period correct. That's one way to spend the winter. Excellent work and I'll be waiting to see the end results. It's going to be a beautiful piece.

Amazing how all that will be covered. But you will know! Excellent, just excellent… Love the radius on the ends.

Thanks everyone.

Bob, it's birch actually. I haven't worked with it before but I really like it.

Arthur, funny thing. I said the same things when I saw the video the first time. Both of them.

I'm impressed. Wonderful workmanship. The ends are very interesting and help to make the piece. Look forward to the next posting.

Wow, super work! I love the mix of the box tails in the center, but the dovetails on the top lend the impression that they're ALL dovetails, which would be impossible to assemble of course. Looking forward to some updates when the rest of the marquetry is finished.

The joinery is so cool you should skip the marquetry ;) Well done so far.

Wow Paul! It'll be a shame to cover over all that fine carpentry … but I know you'll dress it up with some pretty fine Marquetry! Glad to see you're keeping the artistic juices flowing during this pandemic. When restrictions ease up, I look forward to a social distanced visit in your workshop!!

Well Paul, when you knock together some kitchen cabinets…

you really go over the top!

I can't imagine you are going to store bags of flour and bottles of cooking oil in that.

Amazing as always!

Very cool. Wonder which will take longer - the marquetry or the joinery!?
Keep us updated on the marquetry as you go along. That type of work fascinates me and building my own chevalet is on the to do list in next few years.
Thanks for sharing.

First I've seen this fantastic joinery. Truly a exercise in a production that will last for ever. Appreciate the post but, also appreciate your patience and artful approach to the craft. Just superb. I'd also like to add a twist to your bird and worm analogy… the early bird gets the worm but, if you're a worm, sleep late! Thanks for sharing. Hope to see more in the finish phase. Keep charging.

Awesome!

Did you have any particular book as a reference, or did you just figure it out?
