One of my friend’s bought a pizza peel on Amazon that wasn’t able to go the distance. So, he asked me to build him a replacement. I decided to go with soft maple since it was a nice balance between $ and weight when compared to other domestic hardwoods.
I started with 3/4” stock, and planed the leading edge down to about 1/8”. I used my jack plane set for a pretty heavy cut to remove most of the material and then used my ROS to smooth everything out. I think I ended up taking this to 220 grit. I applied one coat of mineral oil first, and after that had soaked in, I came back and applied one coat of a mineral oil beeswax mixture. This is the same combination I use for cutting boards, and it came out really nice. The main portion was 16” x 18” with a ~10” long handle.

Looks good. My buddy got a wood fired oven for Christmas so I might make him a peel like this. Thanks for the inspiration.
