I had it with not finding the size dowel I needed and end up buying more. This rack is organized and should prevent unnecessary trips to the store for dowels. My old rack had round holes and looked similar to a cue stick holder. The square or rectangle compartments on this one prove to hold a lot more It has 14 compartments for different sizes and one for misc. metal, threaded rod, etc. I used old bamboo flooring for entire project glue and screwed. I cut dado’s and used MDF for dividers. I even marked where everything should go this time. LOL.
Maybe this will help someone else too. It only took me 31 years to replace the old one I made.
Thanks for looking.

With all that precise woodworking, I’m surprised the size labels are not carved or marquetry.

This is a pic of the old rack I had. I remember moving it from the old house. My brother was there helping me and I told him to bundle up all the rods and throw the rack away. He said keep the rack, you’ll be too busy doing other things than worrying about making another one. I said whatever. Well it only took me 31 years. Hahahaha
The cup is for small pieces 6’’ or less. I didn’t have the heart to toss them.

I do the same thing and have too many dowels. Mine are all piled into 1 compartment in my cutoff bid and have no idea what I have. There are some great ideas here I’ll have to use. Thanks Dave.

Thanks Ivan, your welcome. I figured this would be handy for a lot of us.
Phil 32, don’t laugh I did consider it but it wasn’t worth it. My shop is not for show.
pottz that seems like the consensus of ways most of us store these things. Hope it helps.
Thanks Rich1955. All in one compartment makes me laugh. I guess my old one wasn’t so bad after all. LOL.
Thanks Dick. It wouldn’t be bad if I had to get something at the store anyway but lots of times it was just for them, and then come home and find them later. DANG

You one upped me Dave, I just finished sorting mine into two “wads”, metal and wood 8^)
Your rack looks fine and functional, just needs more dowels to look happy!

Nice job of organizing Dave. Mine are still in a 5 gallon bucket.

Splintergroup that’s great, two wads, makes me laugh. That’s how I felt before I started this. I beginning to enjoy the way others store theirs.
Hi Lee. Another good one. A 5 gallon bucket isn’t that bad if I had it in the open where I could rifle through it. That rack I built is behind the drill press so I have to reach behind it and grab what I need.

Golly, Dave! That’s nice!
I have a handful of half-inch dowels. Everything else is just spare boards of lumber and a lathe or hollow auger so I can make my own. I keep thinking I should get a doweling machine, but hen i would need to build another bench… and an extension on the shop… and and and….

Superb to be that organized, and clearly that’s what leads to the great works that you produce.
Its all fitting into place,

It only took you 31 years! What are you planning for the next 31 years Dave? LOL! I need one of those but I also need some space to hang it which I don’t have. Just yesterday I was looking for a place to put my dowels. They end up in places never to be found again! Nice work on this good long awaited idea Dave!
