A family tree for 2021

TL;DR: Wife is pregnant after a miscarriage earlier this year. I made a little family tree thing I saw in a cute Christmas movie that I recommend everyone watch.

Back in September, a few days before my wife’s birthday, we found out we were going to have a miscarriage. I think I speak for both of us when I say that was the worst thing that has ever happened to either of us, and it took place in 2020…the year of worst things.

For her birthday I got her a set of earrings that had my wife’s birthstone and what would have been the baby’s birthday and made this box to hold them

In late November we found out she was pregnant again and spent the better part of the next month worrying about it. Mid December, because of our concerns the doctor did a blood test as it was too early for an ultrasound to see anything. The blood test was not promising. According to the nurse who initially gave us the results, the beta levels in her blood should have quadrupled in the 3-4 days between the two blood tests and they hadn’t quite doubled. The doctor was more optimistic when we spoke with her, but that nurse basically kneecapped our hope over the holidays.

On the 28th we had our first appointment with the doctor and were told things were going well but at the 8 week appointment the chance of miscarriage would go way down, so we opted to wait to tell people until after the appointment today.

Everything went well today, it went from being a tiny bean to a gummy bear. We could even see its heart beating. It was pretty great.

Over the holiday we watched the movie Klaus

Without ruining the plot too much, it’s a cute Christmas movie about children sending Santa letters, the spoiled son of a wealthy postmaster learning not to be a shiftless slacker, and two warring clans on a remote island in the far north.

There’s a scene where the spoiled postmaster’s son is pitching making more toys for children to Klaus when he pulls a curtain down to reveal a family tree with only Klaus and his dead wife on it, with a bunch of empty places where the children they never had would have gone. While that scene was a real bummer, I really liked the design and decided to make one after our appointment on the 28th.

The picture here is from later on in the movie when Klaus learns that the children of the town are his metaphorical family and they fill his family tree with figures.

Now that we’ve had our 8 week appointment I finally gave the gift to my wife. I didn’t want to give it to her sooner for fear that it would be a little too on the nose if we got bad news today.

So yeah, good day.

If you haven’t watched this movie before I highly recommend it, it’s definitely one that I’ll add to the regular holiday rotation going forward.

I loved that movie. It was much better than the other junk that’s normally on Netflix. And a welcome relief from the 2020 insanity (still) going on right now…

Nice box! And a nice family tree.

May God bless you with a healthy child in the near future!
